Call or Text 988 for Help With Suicidal Thoughts or Behaviors

Did you know that 727,000 people die from suicide every year, according to the World Health Organization? Or that suicide was the third-leading cause of death among 15- to 29-year-olds globally in 2021?

September is Suicide Prevention Month

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and though it is a difficult topic, suicide affects families, friends and communities everywhere. By raising awareness, we hope to encourage those who are in crisis to seek help while educating our communities about the risk factors and warning signs of suicide.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has resources available if someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts or behaviors. Ways you can help include:

  • Call 911 if danger for self-harm seems imminent.
  • Call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline to talk to a caring professional.
  • Ask them if they are thinking about killing themselves. This will not put the idea into their head or make it more likely that they will attempt suicide.
  • Listen without judging and show you care.
  • Stay with the person or make sure they are in a private, secure place with another caring person until you can get further help.
  • Remove any objects that could be used in a suicide attempt.

No one should struggle alone. Together, we can create a community of support and hope.
